Since Jason & I had been together, we had ridden over 9,000 miles together. We’d taken trips to the Florida Keys and back, from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Coast, destination rides with our friends and everything in between. We’d never had any problems or issues with his bike, until we did! We usually rode every week, if not two or three times a week. During the cold season, our annual two weeks of winter in Florida, we didn’t ride at all. Then it happened! The winter seemed to be over, after two weeks, and we were back on the bike! We took a ride to Solomon’s Castle, but before we left, we had to jump the battery on the bike.
Once we rode for about an hour or so, the battery charged back up, so we attributed the dead battery to not having it on the trickle charger for those two weeks. We got to the Castle pretty late in the afternoon and they were closing so we only had time to take a quick tour of the grounds, but not enough time to actually tour inside the Castle or eat at the restaurant. Jason hadn’t been there before, so since we were in the area we had to at least stop for a minute.
The staff were welcoming and invited us to walk through the gift store and restaurant even though they were closed, and then they invited us to come back. We’ll definitely do that another time and write more about it.
We thought that since we had ridden all day, that the battery would be fine the next day when we were going to take another ride. Well, we were wrong! We took a short little drive to see the sunset and it happened. Jason turned off the bike and yep, dead battery again. Thank goodness for neighbors that are like family! Our friend brought a jump box and followed us home.
After leaving the battery on the trickle charger for a couple of days, we took the bike out of the garage to go on another ride and Jason forgot something inside, so he shut it off. Bad idea! Dead battery again. Since the battery was under warranty, we took a ride to the local Harley Davidson dealer and after a bit of back and forth and help from a friend, we got a new battery installed while we had lunch there.
